How it's calculated
- Times per week = times per day × 7 (or the weekly number you enter).
- Money per week = cost each time × times per week. If you enter a cost per day, it's cost per day × 7.
- Time per week = minutes each time × times per week ÷ 60.
- A year is 52.18 weeks (365.25 days), a month is a twelfth of a year, and 5 and 10 years simply multiply the yearly total — prices are held constant, so no inflation is added.
- Equivalents divide the yearly total by a typical price; the investing line uses monthly compounding at the rate you choose.
Worked example
Say it happens 1 times a day at $5 each time, taking 15 minutes. That's 7 times a week, so $35 and 1.8 hr a week. Multiply by 52.18 weeks and you get $1,826 and 91 hr a year — about 3.8 full days. Over 10 years: $18,263.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the cost of a bad habit?
Multiply what it costs each time by how many times it happens in a week, then by 52.18 for a year. Do the same with the minutes it takes to see the time cost. This calculator does both and shows weekly, monthly, yearly, 5-year and 10-year totals.
Are the default numbers accurate?
They're typical example prices to get you started. Prices vary a lot by country, city and brand, so replace them with what you actually pay — the results update instantly.
Does the calculator include inflation?
No. Prices are held constant, so the 5- and 10-year totals are, if anything, on the low side if prices rise.
Is my data stored anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser. If you share a link, the numbers you entered are included in that link's address so others can see the same result.
What's the best way to cut back on a costly habit?
Research on habits suggests replacing a routine works better than just trying to stop it. Notice what triggers the habit, then plan a specific, enjoyable alternative for that moment — and track your progress.
