If you invested it instead

Illustrative only: assumes a fixed return compounded monthly. Real returns vary and can be negative. This is not financial advice.

How it's calculated

  • Times per week = times per day × 7 (or the weekly number you enter).
  • Money per week = cost each time × times per week. If you enter a cost per day, it's cost per day × 7.
  • Time per week = minutes each time × times per week ÷ 60.
  • A year is 52.18 weeks (365.25 days), a month is a twelfth of a year, and 5 and 10 years simply multiply the yearly total — prices are held constant, so no inflation is added.
  • Equivalents divide the yearly total by a typical price; the investing line uses monthly compounding at the rate you choose.

Worked example

Say it happens 2 times a week at $30 each time, taking 30 minutes. That's 2 times a week, so $60 and 1 hr a week. Multiply by 52.18 weeks and you get $3,131 and 52 hr a year — about 2.2 full days. Over 10 years: $31,307.
