How it's calculated
- Times per week = times per day × 7 (or the weekly number you enter).
- Money per week = cost each time × times per week. If you enter a cost per day, it's cost per day × 7.
- Time per week = minutes each time × times per week ÷ 60.
- A year is 52.18 weeks (365.25 days), a month is a twelfth of a year, and 5 and 10 years simply multiply the yearly total — prices are held constant, so no inflation is added.
- Equivalents divide the yearly total by a typical price; the investing line uses monthly compounding at the rate you choose.
Worked example
Say it happens 2 times a day at $2.50 each time, taking 5 minutes. That's 14 times a week, so $35 and 1.2 hr a week. Multiply by 52.18 weeks and you get $1,826 and 61 hr a year — about 2.5 full days. Over 10 years: $18,263.
Frequently asked questions
How much do I spend on snacks a year?
At 2 snacks a day and $2.50 each, that's about $152 a month and $1,826 a year — $18,263 over 10 years.
Does buying snacks in bulk count?
Yes — divide the multipack price by the number of items for a per-snack cost. Bulk buying is cheaper per item but can mean eating more.
How can I snack less without feeling deprived?
Notice when you reach for a snack (boredom, stress, a time of day) and plan an alternative for that moment, such as a short walk, a drink of water or a snack you've prepared in advance.
How do I calculate the cost of a bad habit?
Multiply what it costs each time by how many times it happens in a week, then by 52.18 for a year. Do the same with the minutes it takes to see the time cost. This calculator does both and shows weekly, monthly, yearly, 5-year and 10-year totals.
Are the default numbers accurate?
They're typical example prices to get you started. Prices vary a lot by country, city and brand, so replace them with what you actually pay — the results update instantly.
