How it's calculated
- Times per week = times per day × 7 (or the weekly number you enter).
- Money per week = cost each time × times per week. If you enter a cost per day, it's cost per day × 7.
- Time per week = minutes each time × times per week ÷ 60.
- A year is 52.18 weeks (365.25 days), a month is a twelfth of a year, and 5 and 10 years simply multiply the yearly total — prices are held constant, so no inflation is added.
- Equivalents divide the yearly total by a typical price; the investing line uses monthly compounding at the rate you choose.
Worked example
Say it happens 1 times a day and takes 150 minutes each time. That's 7 times a week, or 18 hr a week. Multiply by 52.18 weeks and you get 913 hr a year — about 38 full days, or 22.8 40-hour working weeks.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours a year do I spend gaming?
At 1 session a day of 150 minutes, that's about 913 hr a year — 38 full days, or 22.8 40-hour working weeks.
Should I include in-game purchases?
Yes, if you make them. Enter your average spend per session (or per day) on items, passes or subscriptions to see the money side too.
Is gaming a bad habit?
Not necessarily. It's worth a look if it crowds out sleep, work, relationships or things you'd like to do. Seeing the yearly hours can help you decide how much time you want to give it.
How do I calculate the cost of a bad habit?
Multiply what it costs each time by how many times it happens in a week, then by 52.18 for a year. Do the same with the minutes it takes to see the time cost. This calculator does both and shows weekly, monthly, yearly, 5-year and 10-year totals.
Are the default numbers accurate?
They're typical example prices to get you started. Prices vary a lot by country, city and brand, so replace them with what you actually pay — the results update instantly.
