5 years$11,740196 hr
10 years$23,480391 hr

If you invested it instead

Putting $196 a month aside at 5% a year could grow to about $13,307 in 5 years and $30,384 in 10 years.

Illustrative only: assumes a fixed return compounded monthly. Real returns vary and can be negative. This is not financial advice.

How it's calculated

  • Times per week = times per day × 7 (or the weekly number you enter).
  • Money per week = cost each time × times per week. If you enter a cost per day, it's cost per day × 7.
  • Time per week = minutes each time × times per week ÷ 60.
  • A year is 52.18 weeks (365.25 days), a month is a twelfth of a year, and 5 and 10 years simply multiply the yearly total — prices are held constant, so no inflation is added.
  • Equivalents divide the yearly total by a typical price; the investing line uses monthly compounding at the rate you choose.

Worked example

Say it happens 3 times a week at $15 each time, taking 15 minutes. That's 3 times a week, so $45 and 0.8 hr a week. Multiply by 52.18 weeks and you get $2,348 and 39 hr a year — about 1.6 full days. Over 10 years: $23,480.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I spend on takeaway a year?

At 3 orders a week and $15 each, that's about $196 a month and $2,348 a year — $23,480 over 10 years.

Should I include delivery fees and tips?

Yes. Service charges, delivery fees and tips can add a lot to the menu price, so use the total you actually pay per order.

How can I order takeaway less often?

Plan a few easy meals for the nights you usually order, keep quick options in the freezer, and save takeaway for a planned treat rather than a default.

How do I calculate the cost of a bad habit?

Multiply what it costs each time by how many times it happens in a week, then by 52.18 for a year. Do the same with the minutes it takes to see the time cost. This calculator does both and shows weekly, monthly, yearly, 5-year and 10-year totals.

Are the default numbers accurate?

They're typical example prices to get you started. Prices vary a lot by country, city and brand, so replace them with what you actually pay — the results update instantly.
