How it's calculated
- Times per week = times per day × 7 (or the weekly number you enter).
- Money per week = cost each time × times per week. If you enter a cost per day, it's cost per day × 7.
- Time per week = minutes each time × times per week ÷ 60.
- A year is 52.18 weeks (365.25 days), a month is a twelfth of a year, and 5 and 10 years simply multiply the yearly total — prices are held constant, so no inflation is added.
- Equivalents divide the yearly total by a typical price; the investing line uses monthly compounding at the rate you choose.
Worked example
Say it happens 6 times a day and takes 20 minutes each time. That's 42 times a week, or 14 hr a week. Multiply by 52.18 weeks and you get 731 hr a year — about 30.4 full days, or 18.3 40-hour working weeks.
Frequently asked questions
How much time do I spend scrolling a year?
At 6 sessions a day of 20 minutes, that's about 731 hr a year — 30.4 full days, or 18.3 40-hour working weeks.
How can I check my real screen time?
On iPhone, open Settings → Screen Time. On Android, open Settings → Digital Wellbeing. Both show your daily average and which apps take the most time.
Can doomscrolling cost money too?
Usually it's mostly time, but in-app purchases, impulse buys from ads and subscriptions can add up. Enter a cost per session if that applies to you.
How do I calculate the cost of a bad habit?
Multiply what it costs each time by how many times it happens in a week, then by 52.18 for a year. Do the same with the minutes it takes to see the time cost. This calculator does both and shows weekly, monthly, yearly, 5-year and 10-year totals.
Are the default numbers accurate?
They're typical example prices to get you started. Prices vary a lot by country, city and brand, so replace them with what you actually pay — the results update instantly.
