How it's calculated
- Times per week = times per day × 7 (or the weekly number you enter).
- Money per week = cost each time × times per week. If you enter a cost per day, it's cost per day × 7.
- Time per week = minutes each time × times per week ÷ 60.
- A year is 52.18 weeks (365.25 days), a month is a twelfth of a year, and 5 and 10 years simply multiply the yearly total — prices are held constant, so no inflation is added.
- Equivalents divide the yearly total by a typical price; the investing line uses monthly compounding at the rate you choose.
Worked example
Say it happens 10 times a week at $7 each time, taking 30 minutes. That's 10 times a week, so $70 and 5 hr a week. Multiply by 52.18 weeks and you get $3,653 and 261 hr a year — about 10.9 full days. Over 10 years: $36,525.
Frequently asked questions
How much do I spend on alcohol a year?
At 10 drinks a week averaging $7, that's about $304 a month and $3,653 a year — $36,525 over 10 years.
How do I work out my average price per drink?
Add up a typical week's spending on drinks (bars plus shops) and divide by the number of drinks. Drinks at home are usually much cheaper than drinks out.
Where can I find support to drink less?
If you'd like to cut down, your doctor is a good place to start, and many countries have free, confidential alcohol support services. Tracking your drinks and planning alcohol-free days also helps.
How do I calculate the cost of a bad habit?
Multiply what it costs each time by how many times it happens in a week, then by 52.18 for a year. Do the same with the minutes it takes to see the time cost. This calculator does both and shows weekly, monthly, yearly, 5-year and 10-year totals.
